The MOON 461 is an analogue power amplifier designed to amplify the signal from a preamplifier or other source component with absolute accuracy. As the most powerful model in the Compass Collection, it is engineered to deliver high current capability, low distortion, and stable performance across a wide range of loudspeaker loads. Its design is centered on preserving the integrity of the incoming signal while maintaining transparency, dynamic expression, and composure under demanding conditions.

The 461 stands as the most powerful amplifier in the Compass Collection and pairs naturally with the MOON 491 network player / preamplifier to deliver the highest level of system performance in the Collection. Its purpose is clear: to provide substantial output capability, strong channel separation, and low distortion amplification in a compact, elegant chassis. The result is an amplifier designed for systems that demand both refinement and headroom, achieved through a focused, efficient, and thoughtfully engineered design. The design philosophy of the 461 is driven by a continuous pursuit of absolute accuracy, transparency, and dynamic capability. Rather than imparting a sonic signature, the amplifier is engineered to maintain signal fidelity, preserving low-level detail, harmonic structure, and linearity across the entire frequency spectrum. From delicate passages to large-scale transients, the 461 maintains consistent performance without compression or strain.

MOON Distortion-Cancelling Amplifier (MDCA), represents the latest evolution of more than four decades of research and development in high-performance analogue amplifier design. While it is not derived from previous topology, this Class AB amplification technology reflects the cumulative knowledge gained through numerous award-winning MOON amplifier designs. MDCA operates on a fundamentally different principle than traditional feedback-based amplifiers, aiming to eliminate distortion and colouration without placing corrective circuitry directly in the audio signal path. Instead, the MDCA circuit compares the input signal to the amplified output in real time, isolates the generated noise and minute, non-linear errors, and injects a precise correction signal directly into the output stage. Because this error correction process takes place outside of the main signal path, distortion is reduced more efficiently while simultaneously lowering output impedance and improving damping factor.

The design is fully DC-coupled and naturally rejects unwanted DC without the need for a servo circuit, and delivers wider bandwidth, lower noise, and significantly reduced distortion compared with previous MOON amplification platforms. The result is an amplifier that combines measurable technical advances with greater clarity, control, and musicality. The amplifier uses two proprietary MOON Hybrid Power supply modules (MHP), one dedicated to each channel. MHP is a proprietary power supply architecture designed to deliver a stable, low-noise, and high-current energy source to the amplifier under all operating conditions. At its front end, a high-performance Power Factor Correction (PFC) stage actively converts the AC mains to a high-voltage DC rail of 400 V. This high-voltage rail feeds a high frequency LLC resonant converter operating in a soft-switching regime, with reduced switching losses and electromagnetic emissions while maintaining high efficiency across a wide load range. Operating at switching frequencies far beyond the audio band, the MHP supply avoids contaminating highly sensitive circuits. The LLC stage is followed by a regulated linear output stage that ensures ultra-low noise, low output impedance, and excellent transient current capability. By separating energy conversion from final regulation, MHP achieves superior voltage stability, reduced ripple and EMI, and consistent performance regardless of input mains and output loads. The 461 features a low-noise signal path engineered for high linearity, strong channel separation, and precise imaging. Its dual-mono architecture—each fed by its own dedicated 800 W power supply—ensures excellent channel isolation and spatial stability under all operating conditions. The amplifier adapts seamlessly to a variety of system architectures with the flip of a toggle switch. Three distinct output modes are available: conventional two-channel Stereo operation, high power Bridged Mono, and Bi-Amping Mono for improved load matching into dedicated low- and high-frequency loudspeaker terminals. This flexibility is complemented by MOONLink connectivity via dual Ethernet ports, for advanced system integration.

The 461 displays the distinctive visual language of the Compass Collection, as seen in the multi-awardwinning MOON 371. It features a meticulously finished black chassis, bead-blasted aluminium cheeks (available in black or silver), and clean architectural lines. Its proportions are optimised for both effective cooling and elegant placement in racks or on furniture, allowing it to integrate seamlessly into a listening environment. As with all MOON products, the 461 is backed by a 10-year warranty.
